The Creme Hut: Serving Up Some Great Tasting Fuel!

Published on 28 December 2025 at 13:09

It's hard to believe that there are still some Murray residents who have never stepped foot inside the Creme Hut.  Perhaps it's because it's on the south side of Chatsworth, and they don't realize it exists because their travels rarely take them that way. Or maybe it's because...they mistake it for a gas station?

Those of us who love it best may chuckle at that statement, but it's true.  Over the years there have been motorists who have actually pulled up to the pump in anticipation of filling their automobile.  However, they quickly learned that the Creme Hut serves a different type of fuel.

This former gas station converted into a restaurant is not the Creme Hut's first location.  For many years it was in Murray Plaza, where Chatsworth Denture Center currently is.  I can easily recall the walls of brown paneling and the giant ice cream cone blow mold type wall hangings, and the table and chair sets that successfully made the move to the new location.  Ms. Shirley was there and she'd take orders, give amounts, accept cash and simply open the register and count out change perfectly...every time...without actually putting in the dollar amount received.  As a young kid learning early elementary math at the time, I recall being amazed she could take a 20.00 bill on an order totaling 12.34 and quickly dole out correct change without calculating it first.

There is more history to the Creme Hut than I am aware of.  Murray once had a restaurant called 'Barney's' and I seem to recall Barney's simply changed names to become the Creme Hut.  I could be wrong. We tried to find out some additional info but was unsuccessful.  Anything you might want to add to the comments to elaborate on the Creme Hut's history is of course more than welcome.

Today it's the place where friendly folks still greet you with a smile, serving a variety of sandwiches, salads, chicken, ice cream and, in my opinion, the best burger in town.

Here's how the menu looks as of Dec 2025.

Diners will enjoy the feeling of nostalgia, with decorations hearkening back to vintage fueling station days while giving off an appropriate '50's style diner vibe.

And of course, meals are best closed out with a hand dipped scoop or blended milkshake!

So the next time you are in the mood for a good dining experience, but don't want to leave Murray County, grab your kids, your spouse, and a quarter for the jukebox, and head to The Creme Hut!
